Biography Tatjana Mirkov-Popovicki is a Canadian landscape painter based in Port Moody, British Columbia, where she immigrated from Serbia in 1994. Although her childhood was filled with reading and drawing, the challenging reality of her native country made her choose education in science. She graduated as a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, and pursued a Hi-Tech career. As soon as she settled in Canada, she embraced art as her next career. She received her art training from the Vancouver Art Academy between 1998 and 2003. Tatjana’s early works include a wide range of subjects and techniques, including watercolor, egg tempera, and oil painting, with special attention to watercolor portraiture for which she won numerous awards and distinction in the Federation of Canadian Artists and Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists. In 2005 she began mastering the acrylic medium techniques, focusing on the subject matter that inspired her from the very first days in her new homeland – Canadian Landscape. Tatjana has been actively involved in the art community, especially through the Federation of Canadian Artists where she served as a President on the Board of Directors, and holds designation of a Senior Signature Artist (SFCA) and Honorable Lifetime Member. Tatjana’s work has been exhibited, collected and represented by several fine art galleries since 2005. Her paintings are in many homes and collections in Canada, US and overseas. Artist’s Statement Canada stretches over 3,855,103 square miles of breathtaking landscape. Artists explore its vastness and bring morsels of beauty as our small gift to the public. For me, this is a humbling an honorable task. I paint scenes of popular landmarks but also a hidden beauty of less accessible locations. Style wise, I bridge the traditional subject matter with a contemporary style, materials and techniques. My goal is to communicate textures, shapes, colors, and subtle messages of the landscape through visual patterns. I search for effects of natural forces, harmonious or dissonant, which I emphasize in order to define a language of the land in my art. For me, Canadian Landscape is endless source of inspiration. The effects of fog, the play of sun-rays on a mountain slope, shapes formed by storms and forest fires, weather conditions that sculpt our landscape. It all composes itself into great surprising patterns which burn into our minds and hearts. I use a variety of tools to express my ideas: color dissonance and harmony, dynamic symmetry in composition, variations in the brushwork and texture of paint. This variety relates to the indefinite diversity found in nature. To visit Tatjana's website please click here. (Opens in a new tab or window) |
